How I Free Up My Work by Delegating to an E-commerce Research Assistant on a Budget
When there isn’t much customer data, making decisions about new products and understanding market demand can be tough. In e-commerce, where each product order can cost a lot of money, it’s important to be careful and smart. Here’s how I get help from a freelance research assistant without spending too much.
My Weekly Process
Every Tuesday morning, I have a meeting with my Executive Assistant (EA). We talk about how our marketing is doing and what products we should work on next. During these meetings, we often run into questions like:
- Does this product need FDA approval?
- What ingredients should we use?
- What safety instructions do we need?
- How can we test if this product will work?
We keep a spreadsheet where we list all our products and the questions we have about them. As we discuss each product, we add any new questions to the sheet.
My freelance research assistant checks the spreadsheet and tries to answer 1 to 3 questions each day. I limit their work to 2 hours a day, so they don’t spend more than 10 hours a week. This helps us get the answers we need without overspending. I found my assistant on Upwork, where you can hire someone for about $10 an hour.
How I Handle Demand Research
For demand research, I focus on two things:
- How other companies write their ads.
- What kind of special deals or offers they run.
To keep things simple, I ask my research assistant to take screenshots of Google ads, Facebook ads, and any videos our competitors post. They share these in our Slack channels so we can easily review them.
By focusing on what can help us make sales first, I can make smarter decisions even when we don’t have a lot of data to start with.
